Desert Talks: Urban Heat

As city dwellers in the desert, Urban Heat is present in our lives daily. As architects, Urban Heat is an important part of the conversation when talking about responsible design. In this episode we turn the mics over to local leaders in the Urban Heat research and mitigation efforts. Local Architect and Educator Darren Petrucci moderates a panel conversation between Eric Iwersen, Maria Salenger and David Hondula as they discuss their efforts to mitigate this deadly issue affecting lives locally.

Guest Moderator: Darren Petrucci, AIA

Darren Petrucci is an architect and professor in The Design School at Arizona State University where he served as School Director from 2005-2012. He is the Suncor Professor in The Design School, a Senior Sustainability Scientist in the Global Institute of Sustainability, and an Affiliate Faculty in the School for The Future of Innovation in Society, and an Affiliate Faculty in the Biomimicry Center. He is the founder and principal of A-I-R [Architecture-Infrastructure-Research] Inc.  He received both a Master’s Degree in Architecture and a Master’s Degree of Architecture & Urban Design with distinction from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design

coLAB Studio, Co-founding Principal, and Senior Associate with Jones Studio. Maria works to infuse culture and re-connections to nature in urban environments with public art and architecture. She trained with a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Arizona and Master of Fine Art from University College London, Slade School of Fine Art. She has taught design studios at Arizona State University and University of Arizona and facilitates workshops to promote diverse voices in art and design practice.

David Hondula currently serves as the Director of Heat Response and Mitigation for the City of Phoenix. 

David also represents ASU in the Global Institute of Sustainability and Innovation where his research focuses on the social and health effects of natural and technological hazards, with an emphasis on extreme heat and power failures. He works closely with local, regional, and state authorities on the development and implementation of plans and programs to make communities safer and more resilient to extreme events. At ASU, Hondula serves on leadership teams for the Urban Climate Research Center and Central Arizona-Phoenix Long-Term Ecological Research Program. He is also on the steering committee for the Arizona Extreme Heat Preparedness and Resilience work group, and a faculty affiliate of the Maricopa County Department of Public Health.

Guest Contributor: Eric Iwersen

Eric has worked for the city of Tempe (28 years) and served in various leadership, planning, sustainability and transportation roles including being an intern, the city’s Bicycle Coordinator, Principal Planner, Streetcar Manager, Transit Manager, Interim Deputy Engineering & Transportation Director, Sustainability & Resilience Director, and Interim Chief of Staff to the Mayor and Council. Currently he serves as the Transportation & Sustainability Director. His work and projects over the last decades include more than $500M in capital projects (parks, streets, rail, bridges etc…). Current work is leading the City’s transportation efforts with bicycle, transit, pedestrian and roadway maintenance initiatives, green construction and building codes, green stormwater infrastructure, and other Tempe efforts to combat heat and support urban cooling.
