Listen To New Architecture Perspectives

Tracing Architecture is a podcast that explores the layers of architecture, examining how many different and often conflicting forces influence the profession, practice, and art form of architecture.

Episode Description:

AI & Architecture: Emerging Technology.

Architects use technology on a daily basis and that technology is ever-evolving. Artificial Intelligence or AI is now becoming commonplace in our lives and it is quickly being adapted to use in the classroom and office. Join us as we gather for a discussion by professionals and educators leading the charge with this emerging technology and defining what the next generation is understanding what AI means and can do. We sit down and talk with Karl Daubmann, FAIA, Sara Codarin, and Brian Kelly, AIA to discuss AI and Architecture.

Episode Contributors:

Guest Contributor: Karl Daubmann, FAIA

Karl Daubmann, FAIA is an architect at the forefront of digital design. He is Dean and University Distinguished Professor at the College of Architecture and Design at Lawrence Technological University in Detroit. He teaches courses in design, AI, and leadership. His design practice DAUB (design, architecture, urbanism, building) focuses on expanding the potential for technology in practice. In 2024, he co-founded PLOP with Sara Codarin. PLOP is a prototyping laboratory for off-site prefabrication that seeks to leverage emerging technologies to transform residential construction. Daubmann is a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome. His research while in Rome focused on construction geometry related to the Baroque.

Guest Contributor: Sara Codarin

Sara Codarin is an architect and educator at Lawrence Technological University’s College of Architecture and Design. Her research spans robotic fabrication, large-scale additive manufacturing, digital craft, computational workflows, and generative AI for world-building. She holds an M.Arch and a Ph.D. from the University of Ferrara, where she focused on robotics for cultural heritage preservation. Her collaborative work on artificial intelligence was selected for the 2025 Biennale Architettura in Venice, curated by Carlo Ratti. She has exhibited her work at Pratt Institute’s School of Architecture, Detroit Month of Design, and Milan Design Week. Sara is a techno-optimist, and she loves robots.

Guest Contributor: Brian Kelly, AIA

Brian M. Kelly, AIA, is an NCARB-certified, licensed architect and an associate professor of architecture at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Previous teaching experience includes California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo and the Hammons School of Architecture at Drury University in Springfield, MO. Brian’s research is broadly investigating contemporary design authorship, specifically interrogating copyright and appropriation within digital applications including artificial intelligence. In 2020, he received a certificate from Harvard Law School for his participation in the CopyrightX program which competitively selects an international cohort of professionals to explore and discuss the role of copyright in creative disciplines. In 2023, he coedited a book with Frank Jacobus, Artificial. Intelligent. Architecture., published by ORO Editions, which brought together 18 leading voices to contemplate the emergent use of AI in architecture. His creative works with AI have been featured in several exhibitions across the US and published internationally.
