Tracing Architecture is a podcast that explores the layers of architecture, examining how many different and often conflicting forces influence the profession, practice, and art form of architecture.
In this special episode, for many the first experience with Architecture is with an image, the Architectural Image. In this episode we sit down with two professionals generating the Architectural Image, Matt Winquist an Architectural Photographer and Austin Nikkel a Rendering an visualization specialist. Both of these gentlemen left behind the practice of Architecture to specialize in the crafting of the Architectural Image, and this is their perspective.
Matt Winquist is an architectural photographer that emerged from the architectural industry with 20+ years of experience with some of the most influential architects and photographers. He has the innate ability to connect with others in his professions for mutually exploring and communicating the built form through understanding of the phenomena of light, materiality and form. He is well traveled domestically and abroad and has been published widely in a variety of architectural publications state-wide and internationally.
Austin Nikkel is the owner and visual director of 5visual, a visualization studio focusing on still renderings, animation, and digital products for the un-built environment. He grew up in Clovis, California and got his undergraduate degree in Architecture from Arizona State University in 2015. He worked for several distinguished architectural firms in Phoenix before starting 5visual in 2018. Over the past 8 years 5visual has worked on projects throughout the United States and internationally, collaborating on over 500+ projects and over 1,000 renderings and counting. He enjoys sketching, digital painting, and perfecting his craft with conceptual design projects and digital art. Outside of work Austin thrives on staying active, exercising, and spending time with his wife and kids.
