In this episode the microphone is manned by Dean José Gámez of College of Arts + Architecture at UNC Charlotte and incoming president of Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture to moderate a conversation with Dean Rene Cheng from the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University, Deputy Dean Phil Bernstein of Yale School of Architecture, and Dean Dan Pitera of University of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture + Community Development. These prominent dean’s discuss the future of architectural education and it’s role in preparing students for the profession and the counter side of where practice picks up the preparation for the future generation of designers and architects.

José Gámez is the Dean of the College of Arts + Architecture and is also currently serving as the President of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture.  José Gámez was the recipient of the 2015 Provost’s Award for Community Engagement, which recognized his action-based research and public scholarship and, in 2006, he was inducted into the Hispanic Scholarship Fund Alumni Hall of Fame. Prior to joining the faculty at UNC Charlotte, Gámez taught at Portland State University and the University of Nevada at Las Vegas.

Renée Cheng is the dean of the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts and senior vice provost at Arizona State University. Prior to joining ASU, she served as dean of the College of Built Environments at The University of Washington, where she led the college to rapid expansion of research and enrollment while increasing integration and collaboration across disciplines. Previously, Cheng was a professor, associate dean of research and head of the school of architecture at the University of Minnesota. There she founded an innovative graduate program linking research with practice and licensure that continues at Minnesota and Washington. Earlier in her career, she taught at the University of Michigan and the University of Arizona. She is a graduate of Harvard’s Graduate School of Design and Harvard College.

Phil Bernstein is Deputy Dean and Professor in the Practice at the Yale School of Architecture, where he has taught courses in professional practice, project delivery, and technology since 1988. He was formerly a Vice President at Autodesk, where he was responsible for setting the company’s AEC vision and strategy for technology and sustaining the firm’s relationships with strategic industry leaders and associations.

Dan Pitera, FAIA, NOMA, Hon. FALA is Dean of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture + Community Development and is currently serving as President of AIA Michigan Board of Directors and the Executive Director of the Detroit Collaborative Design Center (DCDC).  Dean Pitera recently won AIA Detroit’s 2023 Gold Medal and the 2018 Charles Blessing Award. He was a 2004-2005 Harvard University Loeb Fellow and was inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects in 2010.  Dan Pitera, FAIA has lectured and taught globally.
